How to make and print bingo cards

Three steps in the studio above, about a minute in all. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

  1. WordsType or paste one word per line, pick numbers (classic 1–75 or your own range), or choose a ready-made set such as sight words or Thanksgiving.
  2. Card styleChoose 3×3, 4×4 or 5×5 and turn the free space on or off. The big card shows every change as you make it.
  3. PrintPick how many cards, 1, 2 or 4 per page on US Letter or A4, and whether to add the caller's sheet and calling cards. Then download the PDF or print.
  4. Call the gameSwitch to Call the game: the wheel calls each word once, and you can check any winner by the number on their card.

How unique cards work

For each card, ChalkSpin shuffles your list with your browser's cryptographic random number generator (Web Crypto) and fills the squares in order. Each new card is compared with every card already in the batch; a repeat is shuffled again. So a class set of 30, or a run of 1,000, never contains two identical cards.

The caller uses the same fair randomness: every word still on the wheel has an equal chance of being called next, and each word is called only once. Nobody, including us, can steer which card wins. How the randomness works.

With 30 words on a 5×5 card there are about 368 octillion possible cards. Classic 75-ball cards have about 552 septillion.

Classroom bingo ideas

Bingo turns any list you want students to recognize quickly into a game. Five that work all year:

Sight words

This week's Dolch or Fry words on 3×3 or 4×4 cards for K–1. Students hear the word, find it and read it back. Start from sight word bingo.

Math facts

Answers on the cards, facts from the caller (7 × 8), so everyone solves before they mark. Multiplication bingo is ready to print; try addition or fractions too.

Unit review

Vocabulary on the cards and definitions on the caller's sheet: a quick, low-stakes check before a test. See vocabulary bingo.

Holidays and seasons

Thanksgiving, winter and Christmas sets with picture-and-word squares that pre-readers can play.

Find someone who

A first-week or staff PD icebreaker: people mingle and collect a different name in each square. Print find someone who bingo.

Tip: add a few spare words

With exactly as many words as squares, every card holds the same words in a different order. Six or more extras make cards feel different and games last longer. Sheet protectors and dry-erase markers let you reuse one printed set all week, and numbers work well with the random number generator as a second caller.

Ready-made bingo sets

Each set has its own page with ideas and FAQs. Open one, or load it into the studio and edit it.

Bingo card FAQs

What is the free space in bingo?

The free space is a square that counts as already marked, so every card starts one step closer to a line. On 5×5 and 3×3 cards it sits in the middle. A 4×4 card has no single middle square, so ChalkSpin puts it in one of the four centre squares, chosen at random for each card. You can rename it (for example “Star” or your school mascot) or turn it off.

How many squares are on a bingo card?

A standard bingo card is 5×5: 25 squares, or 24 to fill when the middle is a free space. A 4×4 card has 16 squares and a 3×3 card has 9, which suits pre-K and kindergarten. The studio tells you how many words you need for the size you pick.

How do I print bingo cards for free?

Add your words, choose how many cards (up to 30 per batch for free), then press Download PDF or Print in step 3. Pick 1 card per page for big, easy-to-read cards, 2 per page with a cut line, or 4 per page to save paper, on US Letter or A4. No account is needed, and you can make as many free batches as you like.

Why does my PDF look different when I print it?

Print at 100% (“Actual size”), not “Fit to page”, so the cut lines and squares come out even. The PDF is laid out for the paper you chose in step 3 (US Letter or A4); pick the other size if your printer adds a margin. Emoji in your words print as small pictures drawn by your own device, so they look like the emoji on your screen.

How many different bingo cards can I make?

More than you will ever print. With 30 words on a 5×5 card there are about 368 octillion arrangements, and classic 75-ball cards have about 552 septillion. Every batch is checked so that no two cards in it are the same.

How do bingo credits work?

Batches of up to 30 cards are free. Bigger batches, up to 1,000 cards, use one credit for each card above 30, so a batch of 120 uses 90. You see the cost before anything is made, and downloading or printing the same batch again is free. Credit packs are one-time purchases ($5 for 500, $9 for 2,500, $19 for 10,000) and stay valid for 12 months. ChalkSpin Pro ($3.99 a month or $29 a year) makes big batches with no credits. See pricing.

How do you play bingo in the classroom?

Give each student a card and some counters (or a crayon). Call one word at a time with the wheel in Call the game; students mark it if it is on their card. The first to complete a row, column or diagonal calls “Bingo!”. Type their card number into “Winner's card number” to confirm it against the calls so far.

Are my words uploaded anywhere?

No. The cards, the caller and the PDF are all made in your browser, so your list never reaches our servers. ChalkSpin only stores a list if you sign in and choose to save it. Accounts are for adults (18+); there are no student accounts.
