ChalkSpin legal
Accessibility
ChalkSpin aims for WCAG 2.2 AA in every theme and mode: full keyboard control, labelled controls and announced results, reduced motion with instant results, and readable contrast. Here's what works and what we're still fixing.
The short version
- Every tool works with a keyboard; Space spins the wheel.
- Results are announced to screen readers.
- Reduced motion shows results instantly, with the same fair randomness.
- AA contrast in all three themes, light and dark.
Our goal
ChalkSpin should work for every teacher and every class, including people who use a keyboard, a screen reader, magnification, voice control or reduced motion. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA in all three themes (Night Glow, Chalk & Paper and Game-Show Poster), in light and dark mode.
What we build in
- Keyboard: every control can be reached with Tab and used with Enter or Space, focus is always visible, and dialogs keep focus inside until you close them.
- Screen readers: controls have labels, pages have one main heading and landmarks, and results are announced, for example "Winner: Maya" after a spin.
- Reduced motion: if your device asks for less motion, the wheel shows the result instantly and celebrations are off. Anyone can turn on Instant result in a wheel's options. Instant results use exactly the same randomness.
- Colour and contrast: text and controls meet AA contrast in every theme and mode, and colour is never the only way something is shown: slices carry names, and the winner is written out.
- Sound: sounds are optional and never the only signal; you can switch them off on any tool.
- Zoom and small screens: pages reflow from 320 pixels wide and at 200% zoom without sideways scrolling, and touch targets are at least 44 pixels.
- Projectors: presentation mode uses large type and high-contrast results for the back of the room.
Keyboard shortcuts on the wheel
Shortcuts work when the wheel has focus or in presentation mode, never while you're typing in a field.
- Space
- Spin the wheel (or press Enter)
- F
- Presentation mode; full screen while presenting
- S
- Shuffle the entries
- U
- Undo the last change
- Esc
- Leave presentation mode, close a dialog or menu
Known limitations
- Wheels with many entries can't fit every name on a slice. Above 40 entries the wheel shows the name under the pointer in large type, and every entry stays readable in the list.
- Bingo PDFs are designed for printing and aren't tagged for screen readers yet. Your words stay on the page as text.
- Ads are supplied by Google and may not always meet the same standard. They're labelled and kept apart from the tools.
How we check
We review every page with keyboard-only use and automated accessibility tests (axe) in all six theme and mode combinations, check contrast in the design system, and fix serious issues before release. This statement is a self-assessment, last reviewed on the date at the top.
Tell us what to fix
If something on ChalkSpin is hard to use, please tell us: use "Report a problem" at the bottom of any page, email support@chalkspin.com or use the contact form. Tell us the page and what happened. We reply within two business days, and if you need something in another format (for example a word list as plain text), we'll help.
